Socks are a pair of cloth usually made of cotton that are worn on the feet before wearing a pair of shoes. Traditionally, this is worn so as to protect the feet from rubbing against the shoe and to absorb moisture or sweat produced by the feet. Wearing socks also keeps the inside of the shoes clean. In some countries where the temperature always drops below zero, socks become essential in keeping the legs warm as possible. Also it is evident that socks are part of sports fashion. Sport shoes are always worn with socks as in the case of basketball, volleyball, tennis, golf and many other kinds of sports.
In some countries like Japan, wearing knee high socks becomes a part of the school uniform called the sailor suit where the skirt is pleated and hangs on the knee, with blouse usually white and navy blue in color. This is allowed as part of the cold weather uniform style where textured leggings, long sleeved undershirts, sweater vests and cardigans are in fashion. In other schools, jumper uniforms are worn with polo, a jumper skirt and knee high socks.
In soccer, to keep the shin guards in tight grip and gain comfort as the soccer players run through the field to score, high socks that reaches the knees are worn. Also in baseball, the pants are folded properly, worn only up to the knees and are matched with socks that are pulled up to the knees. This is done so running and bending the knees will be a comfortable task to do, and making score will be easier. In ballet, socks reaching the knees and extending up to the waist forms part of a ballerina’s get up. The legs are covered with long white leggings from the foot to the waist. The leggings are worn with a fancy skirt and a leotard.
