Make Over Your Room with a Red Rug

February 4th, 2010

If your room is looking a bit dull and boring a red rug may be just what you need to add a bit of life, but red is not a great color for every room so take care that your room will actually be enhanced by it. If your room is quite plain and neutral however here is a plan for bringing it to life with the help of your rug.

1. Decide Which Color Red to Choose

Some rooms look best with bright red accents, others with a burgundy color scheme and yet others with something in a cherry red color which has blue undertones. Choose your red depending on the other colors in the room. If you’re not sure hold samples against your walls, floor and soft furnishings to determine which color red goes best.

2. Determine the Right Size and Shape

Decide on the kind of rug you are looking for. Different rugs are suitable for different situations. For example, do you want a large red area rug to put under your coffee table or a small hearth rug to help draw attention to your fireplace?

3. Decide on Pattern or Plain

A plain rug makes the biggest impact in many cases as you get a bright splash of red with no interference from any other color, but patterned rugs also have their place and give you the means of introducing a number of different colors and tying your room scheme together. If your walls are beige, for instance, a red and beige patterned rug may look better than a plain one.

4. Which Style?

It is mainly the style of your room that will determine the best style of rug. A red oriental rug suits a traditional interior whereas a rug with large geometric patterns suits a contemporary room.

5. Enhance the Effect with Accessories

Once you have chosen your rug pick out a few complementary accessories using the same color red to give your room a coordinated look. You can do this quite simply with a vase or a few cushions which are easy to find in different shades of red.
