Lemon trees are fairly easy to care for once there basic requirements have been met. You will do more maintaining of the lemon tree during its first few years than at any other time. Lemon trees off year-round color to the yard or garden and sweet smelling blooms. Lemon trees are available in two sizes, the standard and the dwarf. The standard lemon trees can reach 12 to 30 feet at maturity. The dwarf lemon trees can reach 4 to 10 feet at maturity, The dwarf lemon trees offer the home grower the opportunity to have a small home orchard. Dwarf lemon trees also do well as container plants. Blooms occur in the spring and summer months. They require full sunlight which consisits of 8 full hours. You will need to consider the placement of the trees as they do have thorns on the branches. If you reside where the summer months get very hot, they will do best where they can be shaded in the afternoon hours.

They require regular watering at every one week intervals unless you live where the temperatures get real hot and then you will need to water every other day. Lemon trees prefer a well drained soil and do not like a wet and soggy soil. A good idea is to add mulch to the soil to aid in the drainage and to prevent a soggy soil. Be careful to keep the mulch away from the base of the trunk since this can promote disease and insect problems. They can handle cold climates as cold as 20 degrees, however will need to be protected from freeze at around 27 degrees. If residing where the summer months get real hot its best to paint the trunk with a diluted latex paint to protect the tree.

Lemon trees are self-pollinators and therefore don't require insect pollination. Ripe fruit can remain on the branches for up to 3 months however, its best to pick the fruit as soon as the lemons are a bright yellow color. Little pruning is required except for weak branches that may break or split due to the weight of the fruit. Pruning is mainly to shape the trees if for nothing else. A citrus fertilizer should be added twice per year. Dwarf lemon trees do very well inside or outside and make a great container plant.
