Famous French Quotes About Love

It's common knowledge that French is the language of love. Whether you agree with this or not is a different matter. However, you might have a harder time denying the truth of the statement if you are exposed to some famous French quotes on the topic. That is, until you take a look at some of the more sarcastic ones.
For one of the truly lovely quotes on love in any language:

"Love is, above all, the gift of oneself" -quoted by Jean Anouilh.
They say it's better to give than to get, especially in love. While this may not be true, it IS important to give of oneself. This quote also speaks of how we should be true to ourselves, and to show our true selves, especially in love.

For a realistic look at some of the things associated with romantic relationships, namely breakups, there's this little number by Jean de la Bruyere:
"At the beginning and at the end of love, the two lovers are embarrassed to find themselves alone."
This one's not pleasant to think about, and he puts it in such a way that love seems silly.

Many famous French quotes about love will be familiar to us, indeed, we aren't even aware most of the time how much of the wisdom regarding matters of the heart has crossed the Atlantic from France. This one's similar to the one by Jean Anouilh. It's from the great Voltaire, one of the greatest French writers and philosophers:
"Le prix d'Amour, c'est seulement Amour...
Il faut aimer si l'on veut etre aime."

"The price of Love is simply Love ...
One must love if one wants to be loved."

And lest we forget that love relationships are not the only relationships, consider this quote by Jean de La Fontaine: "Rare as is true love, true friendship is rarer." When you think about the truth of this thoughtful French quote, it makes you more grateful for the friends that you do have, and less likely to sacrifice true friendship for a romance as has so often happened.
