Type 2 diabetes can result in quite a few challenges. Staying healthy means that you are going to have to be very careful when it comes to your activities, your blood sugar levels, your diet, and more. Maintaining healthy blood sugar levels is very important, and long hours spent in the workplace where healthy foods are not readily available can make this very difficult. When you start looking for healthy, nutritious foods, vending machines and cafeterias generally come up short. While it is more difficult for certain, working long hours does not have to mean that you will not be able to find the kinds of foods that you should be eating.
When it comes to snacking, most people look no farther than a vending machine. The problem with foods such as these is that diabetics in particular do not tolerate the high levels of refined carbohydrates in them. Blood sugar spikes and weight gain are about all that results from eating these kinds of foods, since there is very little in them that could be considered nutritious in any way. They are the worst things you can eat when you are trying to keep your blood sugar levels normal.
Supplying your own snacks is the best way that you can eliminate this problem. Fresh vegetables are your best option, as are cheeses and lean meats if you have a cooler or mini refrigerator in which to keep them cold. When you have type 2 diabetes, it becomes very important that you keep your blood sugar levels under control, which is best done by eating plenty of nutritious foods that contain lots of fiber. If you do not have a refrigerator that you can use, you may instead want to consider taking some nuts to work with you. They are a tasty snack option that also contains a good deal of fiber.
When you go get lunch in a cafeteria, most of the foods that you are going to find are going to have a similar nutritional deficiency. In order to keep the costs down, many standard cafeteria foods are processed and are filled with flour and sugar. When a diabetic eats foods such as these, blood sugar spikes are almost always the result. Still, the alternative of not eating anything is not a good option either.
How do we solve this problem? You can always brown bag your lunch. There may be some peer pressure to eat unhealthy foods, kind of like you may remember from going to school. Just remember that maintaining good health is more important to giving in to that kind of peer pressure.
