Cross Country Running Shoes: Brooks Mach 12 Review

Although they may not be capable of traveling faster than 9,000 miles per hour, the Mach 12 can certainly deliver 9,000 meters with speed, comfort and style. The Brooks Mach 12, introduced in June 2010, is a super-light cross country racer designed for distances from 3k to 10k. It is available in both the spike and spikeless versions for both men and women. The version with spikes is best suited for grass and dirt, whereas the spikeless (racing flats) version is best for asphalt, rubber, and wood.

Building on the foundation of the successful design of the Brooks Mach line, the Mach 12 has been tuned up and made even lighter than its predecessor, the Brooks Mach 11. The upper part of the shoe provides superior breathability and the Dynamic Arch Straps create a snug custom fit to keep you wrapped tight during a race. Brooks also added more forefoot toe rocker, which helps with spring and propulsion.

The midsole and outsole preserve the proven design that has worked so effectively for six previous rounds of Brooks cross country shoes. Like the other recent models, the upper is supported well by HF-welded midfoot overlays, but at the same time leaves a bit of room in the forefoot for the toes to spread out.

The Mach 12 outer sole is built with an prominent lug configuration which ensures the best traction on any terrain. The spike version of these XC racers has a 5-spike configuration, which includes a spike wrench and ten 6mm spikes. The good support from the upper, ample cushioning underfoot, and extra traction on the outsole combine to make the Mach 12 an unbeatable value.

The Brooks Mach 12 features the following technical specs:

  • Synthetic Overlays are located strategically to provide a snug and secure fit
  • Air Mesh comprises the upper, which is a breathable mesh that releases heat
  • Strobel Last utilizes a full length layer of foam, providing cushioning and flexibility
  • Dynamic Arch Straps, located in the midfoot, provide a tighter fit
