Safco Builds A Winning Printer Stand

March 8th, 2010

Winsome might be the number one name when it comes to printer stands, but they’re not the only company that can design a high quality product. While the printer stand that’s right for you will have a lot to do with your specific priorities – space, durability, sturdiness, mobility – there are always going to be some stands that are built better than others. The amazing thing about this industry is that the best products often cost the least. This is an odd occurrence, considering the materials used to build the stands are often the same. It’s possible that size is a factor, but a good printer stand is one that can fit a lot without taking up much space. Regardless of the reason why the better stands cost less, it’s better for the consumer.

The printer stand we’ll briefly review in this article is the SAF 1856BL Safco Scoot Desk-Side Printer Stand. While this has been a relatively popular item, shortening the name to something like ‘Safco Desk-Side Printer Stand’ might have helped. It’s a good thing these mostly sell online. No one is going to walk into a retail store and ask a clerk for an SAF 1856BL Safco Scoot Desk-Side Printer Stand. They’d probably have to write it down to get it right. The good news is that the name is the worst part about this product, which is more than can be said for many other printer stands.

The Safco Scoot Desk-Side Printer Stand (we can shorten it a little) has a list price of $185. That’s pretty steep for a printer stand. While that price can still be justified, you’re better off buying at Amazon, where it sells new for $109.95. This is a perfect example of getting a lot for a little when it comes to printer stands. The dimensions for this product are 26.25 x 20.25 x 26.25 inches. It weighs 42 lbs. It comes in black only, will match almost any room, and is attractive. It’s also extremely mobile, making it best suited for those who are constantly on the move. Based on its size, it’s also great for freeing up desk space. A folder pouch on the side is a nice bonus. There’s a ton of space on the bottom, easily enough room to hold a printer on the top, and a small inner shelf toward the top that’s perfect for storing accessories.

Tips for Choosing the Most Suitable Dining Room Table

March 5th, 2010

The dining area is definitely an integral part of any home design. This is where you entertain and welcome guests during a get-together as well as other special occasions. That being said, furnishing your dining area with the appropriate dining room table is extremely important. Remember that dining tables now come in a wide variety of sizes, shapes, designs, styles, and configurations. Therefore, it is vital that you assess your choices carefully to ascertain that you will acquire the right one. A round dining room table may not work for you however great it looked in the store.

With an overwhelming option available, your shopping activity can become a daunting task. But why make things difficult for you if you can use important buying variables to help you come up with the best choice.

To start with, you have to take into account your specific needs. Determine how many people will be using the table and how it will be used. Basically, this is more of a personal choice. The table that you require will greatly depend on your personal requirements. However, always remember to keep comfort and convenience in mind when buying one.

The available space is also a very important factor to consider. Before browsing through different dining table models, it is best if you take precise measurements of the actual dimension of the area where you are planning to place the table. This is vital to ensure a perfect fit. As much as possible, give at least 30 to 36 inches allowance around the table’s perimeter to give enough room to move the chairs freely. In addition to that, it would be ideal to buy a table that will provide sufficient legroom.

Lastly, carefully sift through different types and models of dining tables. The type of table that you need will considerably depend on your space requirements, the setting that you want to achieve, and its seating capacity. Some of the table types that you have to carefully evaluate are as follows:

• Rectangular Dining Table – This is perhaps the most common type of table used in many homes. If you are looking for a table that will be able to accommodate more people, then this is the best choice for you.

• Square Dining Table – This is the ideal choice for those who want to introduce an intimate dining room ambience. Additionally, they are very space-efficient, thus, making them the ideal choice for those with smaller spaces.

• Round Dining Table – If you are into unconventional shapes, then the round table is the excellent option for you. Families with small children will also greatly benefit with round dining room tables since they are very child-friendly due to their smooth round edges.

Take note of the above-mentioned tips to help you find the right dining room table that will satisfy your dining room requirements!

Ripe fruit can remain on the branches for up to 3 months however, its best to pick the fruit as soon as the lemons are a bright yellow color. Little pruning is required except for weak branches that may break or split due to the weight of the fruit. Pruning is mainly to shape the trees if for nothing else. A citrus fertilizer should be added twice per year. Dwarf lemon trees do very well inside or outside and make a great container plant.

Multiple Metal Carport Solutions

February 21st, 2010

A metal carport may not be the first thing you think about when you are considering a type of shelter for your vehicle but they do offer great protection and at a low cost for whatever type of vehicle you own. The stability of the structure sometimes requires a wind or pay load rating depending on where you live, to guarantee that the shelter will withstand high winds and heavy snowfall.

Metal shelters can be purchased in either free standing or attached installation methods. The roof can be a variety of materials including flat metal frame, framed with laminate, curved metal with aluminum, or canvas. An A-frame roof style can match your home’s design style, and can have complementary aluminum siding so that it will appear to be an extension of your home. Some people have a garage and choose to attach a carport to the side of their garage to increase covered parking for additional vehicles or to add a little outdoor living space that is protected from hot sunny days.

For temporary shelter for your car or family outing a plastic carport may be exactly what you are looking for. Easy to find in almost any department or DIY hardware store, they are relatively easy to assemble and usually have a waterproof canvas top. You can get a little more advanced model that has enclosed sides with them that can be also be used as a shed. There are many sized carports available in stores but one or two car sizes are common. Custom sizes can be purchased to accommodate larger vehicles.

The designs available certainly make it easy to for you to choose the style you want. Financial savings in comparison to a garage installation are huge. A metal carport is a sure bet and with the right design will add curb appeal to your home and much needed protection for your vehicles.

What To Look For In Utility Sinks

February 14th, 2010

Utility sinks are the workhorses of the home sink fleet.  They handle all of the jobs that the others are just too dainty to tackle, like washing muddy work boots and rinsing off tools.  There are some important things to consider when shopping for them, things other than durability and looks.  I aim to clear all of that up for you in this post so that you can make a great decision when it’s time to shop for your next utility sink.

The construction of the sink is important because it determines its life and durability.  Most commonly, these sinks are made from either stainless steel or a hardened plastic resin.  Both are great choices, but the plastic resins will only cost a fraction of what the stainless variety does.  Both materials are also extremely durable, so you won’t have to worry about the sink breaking or leaking any time in the near future, most of these sinks will last as long as the home does with some basic care and maintenance.

When installing a sink in a damp basement or garage you also have to consider mold and mildew resistance.  This is a big reason why ceramic isn’t a good choice for utility sinks since they’re prone to mildew.  Stainless and plastic are both non-porous so mold and mildew usually aren’t an issue, but if you do see it forming, a quick wipe down with an ammonia or bleach based cleaner will take care of it.

Another important thing to consider is whether or not you need a wall mounted or free standing sink.  The free standing sinks are much more durable, since they support themselves, which is great if you do heavy duty cleaning.  Wall mounted sinks take up less overall space and don’t have legs to trip over.

Upgrading your utility sink is an easy way to improve the function of your home without spending a lot of money.  They are also easy to install for the DIY homeowner.  This makes it the perfect weekend project now that you know how to choose the perfect one!

Patio Cushions for Life Outdoors

February 14th, 2010

The better the climate we live in, the more we tend to use our garden as an outdoor living space rather than just an area of attractive greenery outside our home. But, even if your summers are too short for your liking, you want to make the most of the time when it is too hot to stay indoors by making your garden and patio as comfortable as possible.

Outdoor cushions are simply essential to soften the hard surfaces of our garden furniture and make them comfortable and welcoming. No matter how beautiful it looks, patio furniture, as a rule, is not wonderful to sit on when devoid of padding.

Most quality garden furniture comes with cushions to suit when you buy it but with the hard wear that cushions receive year after year you will find out that they look old well before you are thinking of buying new garden furniture. You will then need to look for replacement patio cushions to give your garden a fresh new look.

As long as you can find the right size you will find that you have a lot of choice in cushions to replace your old ones (and if not, you can always buy custom made cushions). In either case, ensure that you buy quality cushions in sturdy outdoor fabric so that the cushions are resistant to damp and fading and that they are well made with reinforced seams and zip fasteners. This means that they will be able to withstand a lot of use.

When you change patio cushions you can take the opportunity to “redecorate” your outdoor space with a new color scheme. Buy a matching table cloth, throw and a few plant pots to go with the new cushions and ring the changes. Also think about adding a matching parasol and scatter cushions to make life outdoors more comfortable than ever.

How to grow and plant corn

February 13th, 2010

Learning how to grow and plant corn takes time.  But it does not take constant attention.  Once you’ve planted your crop you wont need to care for it much to enjoy a healthy harvest.  You don’t want to have weeds and corn so, here are a few things you can do to start your garden.

Your crop will need a lot of sun. If full sunlight is not possible find a place that allows the most sun possible throughout the day.  It is also important to keep the crop protected from wind.  Cornstalks grow up to eight feet high, so a strong wind can break them.

Be sure to add compost or a source of nitrogen and fertilizer into the soil you will use for your crop well before you begin to plant.  Usually two weeks prior is sufficient enough time to soak into the soil.

When you plant the corn, do it in bunches rather than rows.  This well help support the group from possible wind damage and increase pollination.  Plant seeds directly into the ground one inch deep and cover lightly with soil.  Each seed should be no more than one and a half feet apart.

Once the seeds are planted they need to be watered immediately.  Corn relies heavily on both water and fertilizers to keep the tall stalk strong and supplying the corn with enough nutrients the months ahead.  Keep the ground moist much like you would other plants and this should provide the crop what it needs to thrive.

The only maintenance needed during the process other than watering will be to protect from insects and birds and weeds.  This can be done using netting to cover the sprouts until they are strong enough to survive without it.  Keep the ground around the stalks free from weeds by pulling them from the ground by hand.  Do not dig them up as this may disrupt the root system.

Corn is ready to be picked when the cob is firm.  You can also check to see if a white liquid forms inside the kernel of the corncob.  The entire process usually takes between three and four months depending on the weather.

Cooking Healthy with a Vegetable Steamer

February 13th, 2010

Vegetables are a crucial part of any healthy diet. They contain important vitamins and minerals, essential building blocks for your body. A typical way to prepare vegetables is to boil them, but an even healthier option is provided by vegetable steamers.

Health Benefits of Steaming Vegetables
When steaming vegetables you help retain the all-important vitamins and minerals. When boiling vegetables, some of the vitamin and mineral content will seep into the water, and just be thrown away.

How does it Work?
A basic vegetable steamer has two compartments. The bottom one holds water and a means of heating it until it boil, the top compartment holds the vegetables. When the water in the bottom compartment boils, the steam will rise to the top compartment, cooking the vegetables until they are warm and tender, but with vitamin and mineral content intact.

Learning How to Use the Steamer
Most manufacturers will provide a recipe book with guides on how to perfectly steam various vegetables. When you are new to steaming, following these is helpful to get an idea on to do it. If your manufacturer does not provide a recipe book, searching online should provide a wealth of information.

How long to steam various vegetables depend on a number of things; if you want the vegetables soft and tender you should steam them for longer than if you want them crisp. Larger vegetables also require longer steaming than cut or small vegetables. While you are cooking the vegetables, you can gently poke them with a fork to see if they are ready.

Delicious and Healthy
Using a vegetable steamer is a great place to start when you are looking for healthy cooking tips. It does not only provide health benefits, it also provides the opportunity to serve tasty and varied vegetables with your meals. Don’t neglect your vegetables and maximize the benefits they offer!

Health Benefits of Pineapple

February 11th, 2010

Pineapple is the second most popular tropical fruit in the USA, second only to the banana. Native to Paraguay and Brazil, the pineapple has been used there by the locals for 1000’s of years as a staple fruit and for its health promoting benefits.

Heart Health Benefits of Pineapple
Large prospective studies always show that those who eat the most fruits and vegetables are significantly less likely to develop heart disease than those who eat little or no fruit. One key ingredient in fruits and vegetables that prevents heart disease is vitamin C, and pineapple is abundant in it! Just 1 cup of pineapple provides us with 40% of the RDA (recommended daily allowance). Vitamin C is one of the best antioxidants for protecting LDL cholesterol cells from the damaging effects of free radicals. Once damaged, the LDL cholesterol cells will attach to the artery wall and slowly but surely build up into a plaque creating a condition called atherosclerosis (hardening of the arteries). Atherosclerosis is the number one risk factor out of a variety of conditions that can lead to heart disease.

Energy Production
Pineapples are an abundant source of manganese, a trace mineral that is an essential co-factor for producing energy in the body. Besides this, manganese is also essential for the creation of superoxide dismutase, a powerful anti-oxidant that can only be created in the body. Superoxide dismutase protects the mitochondria in cells from free radical damage. This is important, because the mitochondria are the fundamental energy producers in the body.

Pineapple is also a great source of the B vitamin niacin. Just like maganese, niacin also has essential functions necessary for the production of energy in the body.

Digestive Health Benefits of Pineapples
The core and the stems of pineapples contain a unique digestive enzyme called bromelain. Bromelain is able to break down proteins into their constituent amino acids by breaking the peptide bonds in protein. Because of this useful ability, supplements of bromelain extract have become very popular as a digestive aid, often combined with another digestive enzyme found in papayas called papain.

Anti-inflammatory Effects of Pineapple
Drinking a daily pineapple juicer recipe could be a great aid for those who suffer with arthritis. Bromelain and vitamin C (which we can achieve higher doses of both by juicing) have both been shown in studies to help reduce inflammation and pain when taken at higher doses. Vitamin C is especially effective for helping with the pain of arthritis knee when taken at doses of 500mg or more each day. When taken in the form of real food like fruits and vegetables, vitamin C is even more effective than in supplement form.

Solve Storage Problems With Steamer Trunks

February 8th, 2010

One of the big issues in just about every home is that of storage and having enough space to hold all of our belongings. The answer is sometimes able to be solved by getting rid of some of the older and unused items but this is only a temporary measure as the clutter builds up again.

The answer may be to create some more storage by buying a new cabinet or chest of drawers. A more creative way to solve the problem is to buy pieces of furniture that have multi-functional purposes. The perfect example of this are steamer trunks which can either be used as a bench in the bedroom or as a coffee table in the lounge room. In either case, not only is it a fine decorative piece but it also provides a large amount of storage space.

Some people have these trunks hiding away in a quiet corner or with blankets or clothes piled on top of them masking their decorative appeal. Doing this is wasting a potentially valuable item that can make the room look even more attractive.

The great thing about steamer trunks as storage items is that they were originally designed to hold clothes and other personal belongings for long periods of time. Their initial incarnation was as travelling luggage for people to take on long voyages, so they were designed to store things for months on end. The trunks also have a surprisingly large storage capacity so using one will free up quite a lot of cupboard space.

Because steamer trunks originated back in the 1800s they are honest to goodness antique pieces. In many cases they will have been through a restoration process which can turn even the shabbiest looking trunk into a burnished thing of beauty. Placing an antique steamer trunk in the lounge room will turn it into the crowning centrepiece of the room.

By using a steamer trunk as the answer to your storage problems you can potentially create a decorative masterpiece and talking point for the home.
